I am Gareth Marshall.
Get to know me

My career so far has been an epic journey learning about innovation, sponsorship and most importantly, people.

I started my career as a personal trainer, then moved to advertising and currently I am the Senior Brand Manager for Shield deodorant at Unilever  in South Africa. I have been fortunate to work in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. 

Throughout my career I’ve learnt that whatever you do, if people are at the heart of it and you do things that make a positive difference to someone in a small way, the business results will follow. 

Sport embodies that.

I believe that sport is central to every culture and society and is core to an individual’s health, happiness and even business. Leveraging an athlete mindset in business and even life in general has proven successful for me and many others I’ve encountered. Above all I am striving to make a difference in South Africa through sport. Because of this, I founded the Unleash Academy as a platform to explore this further – Become a Business Athlete.

When I am not working, you will probably find me out running or hunting down another coffee shop in pursuit of the best coffee.

Sport has the power to change the world... become a business athlete

Everything I do is rooted in sport. From training to stay healthy, watching sport or understanding an athlete mindset to succeed in business.

Sport is not just a game. Sport is who I am. Why I am. What I am. Its every second on the clock. Every moment I live. Game day or in the office. I am a business athlete.

I want to leverage this to shift our culture and make a difference in South Africa through sport. My personal mantra that I try to live by everyday is ‘redefine normal’. Everyone’s normal is different and every day we wake up we have the power to change this… I want to change this using sport.

Nelson Mandela famously said: 

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.”

Sport still plays an increasingly important role in more and more people’s lives, on and off the field of play, so we have the opportunity to leave a legacy. This legacy will be a country where the rules of the game are the same for everyone, and behaviour is guided by fair play and good sportsmanship.

Using sport is twofold – first is using sport to unlock opportunities for people to live their dreams and potentially become a professional athlete. The other is using the power of an athlete mindset to succeed in business. What is true for sport, is true for business.

Therefore, I believe that, through sport, we have the power to change lives. 

And I work every day to inspire and enable people to harness the power of sport in their lives.

Become a Business Athlete.

BE A PLAYMAKER, NOT A SPECTATOR

Everything I do is rooted in sport. Either training to stay healthy, watching sport or understanding an athlete mindset to succeed in business.

I am a believer that when you use the power of an athlete’s mindset in business, you are setup to win.

There is a strong correlation between sport and business and harnessing this power can give you a competitive advantage by developing your mindset.

I want to leverage this to shift our culture and make a difference in South Africa through sport.

Through interviewing athletes, business leaders, personal trainers and life coaches, I want unleash the power of an athlete’s mindset to succeed in business.

On the pitch or in the boardroom… the mentality required is the same
